Getting Over Insomnia

Insomnia is a sleep disorder marked by one’s difficulty to sleep or getting enough sleep.  This likely results in daytime episodes of tiredness and drowsiness. The most common symptoms of insomnia are trouble falling asleep on most nights, feeling tired during the day or falling asleep during the day, not feeling refreshed when you wake up, waking up several times during sleep. 

 
Causes of Insomnia
 
A common trigger for a sleeping disorder is stress and worry.  Insomnia can be attributed to depression, an existing ailment, or unhappy and traumatic events that one is experiencing as these will likely leave one vulnerable to stress and anxiety. Other factors include physical illness, environmental distractions, regular changes in sleeping hours due to shift work, caffeine or alcohol consumption, and side effects from medication.
 
Medical illnesses like hot flushes during a menopause period, urinary tract infections and a prostate disease may lead to sleep problems. Insomnia often shows up through episodes of extreme tiredness in the day. This is a potential cause of accidents, various ailments due to a weakened immune system, irritability and poor concentration, interpersonal problems at work and home, and could undermine one’s ability to cope. 
 
The body requires ample sleep and rest to perform well. On the average, eight hours of sleep is ideal rest for the body.  But this is not necessarily true for all. Sleep hours may vary from one person to another. Some are able to make do with 6 while others need more than 8.
 
Treatment of Insomnia
 
Sleep hygiene. This pertains to one’s pratical habits, including sleep.  One’s sleep hygiene needs to be assessed to determine where one needs to change or adjust in order to improve his sleep quality.  Drug medication. They bring in benefits and potential hazards to one’s health.  Antihistamines, the main ingredient in several sleeping pills, is considered to have adverse effects on memory, especially in the older set.
 
The use of sedatives must be under regulation by a doctor because they can cause tolerance and sometimes dependence. If one is taking antidepressant, a decrease in doses may help. Psychotherapy. Seeing a psychiatrist or other mental health provider may be needed to test the patient for a mood or anxiety disorder that contributes to the illness.Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps patients deal with their anxiety and depression.  Antidepressants or other drugs may be prescribed to treat any mood or anxiety disorder you might have.  
 
In less serious cases of insomnia, here are a few techniques that may help one get a decent sleep: 
 
•         Soak in a warm, relaxing bath before sleeping time.
•         A light, soothing massage helps ease off the tension in your muscles. 
•         Listening to music might provide a good sleep ambience.
•         Drink a warm milk or herb tea. 
•         Sleep on a comfortable sleeping mattress and a well-ventilated sleeping area.
•         Get some aerobic activities going in the day. 
 
If you are not able to sleep, get up and do some light and non-stimulating activity.  Exerting more efforts to doze off may just leave you flustered and awake.  These are just few practical and safe ways to get your sleep started. There is more long-term benefits to gain from good habits than from those instant remedies out in the market.
 
Drug medication may help just as it could cause harm. Sleeping pills and antidepressants are among today’s leading prescriptions.  However, as their usage grows, so do the controversial issues such as the Paxil lawsuit.  Each time you opt for some magic pills, you may be better off starting some good and healthy habits before things can get worse.
